When we went over some science problems today, the student was able to get the majority of them right which he had gotten previously incorrect. I gave him some tips to help get into a better mindset when he is taking the test because I know he can score much better in science than he is now.
Covered mathematics and writings sections. Focused primarily on algebra, tackling math word problems, and use of formals. Then discussed strategies for the writing sections, including error identification and sentence improvement. Finally covered the essay section of the test, specifically how to roadmap and decide on a thesis.
The student and I worked on her math homework, subtracting up to twelve. She was having difficulty not being able to use her fingers, so we worked with pennies, and then eventually worked on "counting up" to find the answer. She took it slowly, but processed it well. She is still having some slight difficulty remembering the difference between subtraction and addition. After her homework was finished we worked on addition flashcards, and worked on "counting up" so that she can start doing mental math. She understand the concept, but sometimes has a hard time knowing how many numbers to count up, and loses track on her fingers. We finished up by making flashcards for her sight words. She was confused by the w- words, but all others she did very well with.
Worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with both basic computation and within word problems. Also discussed perimeter and area, and how to find the area of an irregular shape.
Today the student and I read part of another chapter of Fellowship, and then we talked about the history of the horror genre in the United States, right up to the present, touching on themes like Dracula, Frankenstein, and zombies.
I did a final proofread and fact check for the student's two application essays. I read over the essay several times to make sure it was perfect. This marks the end of these tutoring sessions and I will submit these essays tonight!
