I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Kaitlin: Westchester tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. I received my Bachelors of Science in Education and am certified in Mild to Moderate Disabilities K-12. I have taught in a rural school for seven years as a Special Education Teacher. My students have had a variety of challenges, from Specific Learning Disabilities in Math and Reading, Autism, and Epilepsy and Intellectual Disability. In the junior high and high school setting, I have differentiated direct instruction in Math, English,Social Studies, Science, Computers, Reading, and Financial Literacy in small groups and one-on-one instruction. I stayed after school to help study for tests or help with homework. Teaching will always be my biggest passion. The only reason I resigned was to be a stay-at-home mom. I have always had a particular fondness for kids with special needs, but raising two of my own special needs kids has fueled my desire for teaching special education and general education. There are several aspects that I cherish in my teaching: seeing the lightbulb turn on, having the rapport that I build with the students, assisting in several subjects throughout the same hour, and coaching at Special Olympics. My students are very important to me, and I am looking forward to having new students to mentor and to make connections with. I signed up for a broad range of topics for tutoring, and that is because I love to help with any subject. Each subject brings its own excitement and thrill of teaching for me. I am excited to help with Elementary English, Elementary Math, Elementary Reading, Elementary Science, Elementary Social Studies, Kindergarten Readiness, Middle School Math, Middle School Science, Middle School Social Studies, Phonics, and Learning Differences and Special Education. In my spare time, I love to be involved with my family and friends. I have a quirky admiration for languages, specifically German and American Sign Language. I also enjoy teaching sign language to the Vacation Bible School songs and I have tutored some families in sign language to help teach their limited verbal kids to communicate more effectively.
