Allison
Certified Tutor
My name is Allison. I have worked in education for the last seven years, serving students of all ages and academic skill levels. I began my journey as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I pursued a PhD in medieval history. Throughout my time at UNC-CH, I had the opportunity to support undergraduate students and assist them in building their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills. I enjoyed watching my students grow over the course of the semester and develop communication and analytical abilities that would aid them in whatever path of study they ultimately chose to pursue. My academic training allowed me to secure a legal and technical writing position at one of the country's largest immigration law firms. There, I used my advanced communication skills to effectively discuss the cutting-edge research of leading international scholars in the STEM, medical, and social science fields. I can personally attest to the importance of developing transferable skills, and I am passionate about using my academic and professional experiences to enable others to achieve their goals.
While I enjoyed my work as a writer, I longed to return to education. In March 2022, I became a professional tutor. Tutoring allows me to work with multiple age groups on a range of subjects. Over the last sixteen months, I have provided remediation and enrichment to elementary, middle, and high schoolers as well as undergraduate and
graduate students. Not only I have had the opportunity to assist clients of all academic levels with their reading, writing, and grammar skills, I have also provided tutoring in mathematics. I am grateful for the chance to reengage with math and assist students in
developing the fundamental skills they will need to be successful in their high school and college courses. While most of my tutoring career has focused on assisting elementary and middle schoolers develop their math and ELA skills, I have also helped high school students prepare for the ACT and SAT exams as well as create compelling university application essays. The transition to college can be challenging. I want to use my experiences navigating the university admissions process at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to give the next generation of college students a big push forward.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my partner, Charles, and our fur family. We currently have two cats (Bohemond and Norbert) and four bunnies (Ellie, Benji, Sofie, and Percy). I find caring for my animals, several of whom are rescues, extremely rewarding. When I am not with my pets, I like to read classics of American and British literature as well as garden. I am new to gardening. While I still have a lot to learn, I find it so gratifying to cook with herbs and vegetables I have personally grown. The rabbits also seem to enjoy the profits of my labor!
