I'm a playwright, teacher, editors, and teaching artist. I recently moved to New York City after completely a year-long writing residency in Denver with Curious Theatre Company. I grew up in Virginia and attended college in Boston, but this is the first time I've been back east in about ten years. I'm really enjoying the city so far!
My passions are writing (creatively and analytically), traveling, reading, running, yoga, and teaching. While most of my experience is teaching at the collegiate level, I have worked with high school and middle school students as well.
Educational Background: I graduated from the University of Iowa's Playwright's Workshop where I received my MFA in playwriting. Prior to my time in Iowa, I attended the University of Chicago and earned a Masters in English Literature with a focus on the long 18th century and Romanticism (so think Byron, Shelley, Frankenstein, and Jane Austen). My undergrad degree is from Boston College, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa majoring in English and Theater Arts. I also spent a semester in England on a Shakespeare scholarship where I studied at Oxford and with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
Teaching Experience: Currently, I'm an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, and I've also been a guest lecturer at Notre Dame University and UC-Boulder. While at the University of Iowa, I taught History of Theatre, Playwriting I, and Script Analysis. In both History of Theatre and Script Analysis, I required my students to write a well-developed, compelling, argumentative paper. I walked them through all aspects of the project including researching, drafting, revising, editing, and how to properly cite resources. It's important to me that my students know how to craft a compelling argument and can articulate and support why they believe what they believe. In addition to teaching how to write, I also spent a significant time teaching my students valuable study skills including how to read for comprehension, study for a cumulative exam, take notes, and manage their time. My goal was for my students to take what they learned in my class and implement it in all areas of their studies.
I also have experience helping students fill out college applications, and plan and write college essays.
Area of Specialty: My strongest teaching areas are English literature, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and college essay writing. I also am available to tutor in theatre arts and playwriting. If you've ever been interested in developing a script or learning more about the magical world of theatre, I'm happy to discuss these areas as well. My award-winning plays have been produced around the country.
Professional Background: I've worked in the editorial departments for both Cengage Heinle ESL Publishing and the University of Chicago Press. Prior to my time in Denver, I worked as a Content Writer for Nogginlabs, an educational software company, where I helped develop and write scripts for interactive training modules and video games.
Editing and Proofreading: In addition to tutoring services, I am also available to edit and proofread documents, resumes, college essays, etc.
