I became interested in teaching as a young student in high school when our group of friends gathered to study for final exams and I always had the initiative to help my colleagues understand topics that I was familiar with. From there I became the key person to help other prepare in STEM subjects in such a way that as I got older I was hired to tutor children and eventually teenagers. Now that I am in college I have continued my vocation for tutoring others in majors related to mine that have helped me see different teaching techniques depending on the needs of the student. I have always thought that teaching is a learning experience for both the teachers and the students, because as one teaches they practice the concepts and the students learn from someone that is confident on what they are teaching.
I am a Biochemistry major on the way to be a surgeon, but as a doctor and even when I retire I have always been enthusiastic about continuing my teaching vocation specially in the STEM subjects to share how excited and skillful I have always been in the sciences throughout my life. During my degree I have had research experiences that require teaching in which I have excelled and enjoyed.
Most of the tutoring I have done has been informal but I am a person that is always seeking for personal growth and any learning experience I can acquire myself. I am prepared to evaluate my students needs and assess the best approach for them to come out of any doubt they may have. I also believe one of the qualities most valued in a teacher is the humility to say "I don't know" and yet do their best to learn so their students can learn too, because we may not know it all but we have the skills to try in order to teach others who may have a harder time doing so.
My trajectory in college, especially my tutoring experience, has shown me that teaching is one of the most challenging jobs but provides such a varied and exciting environment with different students, subjects, and discussions that makes me so eager to continue every time. I am truly privileged to be such a significant part of other's lives so they can grow and make a difference.
