I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, with a BA in Mathematics and a minor in Statistics. I have been teaching and tutoring since my junior year of high school when I first fell in love with helping people learn.

At Penn, I helped local high school students with everything from math to writing to SAT preparation and college counseling. I also formally tutored my fellow-students in mathematics and physics. Fall of my junior year, I began working as a teacher's assistant for Penn's freshman calculus. I led multiple recitations for up to 80 students in one semester, held office hours, and graded homework.

My teaching style in math-related subjects tends to be detailed and review-oriented. Students become confused in math when teachers skip steps or incorrectly assume that the student understands a previously taught concept. Therefore, I try to explain every step of a problem, unless the student demonstrates to me that he himself can already explain a certain point. I find this teaching method - paired with an enthusiastic interest in the subject and the student - to be quite successful, especially in the one-on-one environment. Students at Penn told me that they preferred my explanations to those of the professor, and some even came from other calculus sections to attend my review sessions.

At the end of the day, however, I do not abide by any rigid teaching style. I just love teaching, and I do whatever is necessary to make a problem/concept "make sense" to the person I'm working with. Even if that means taking a short break, approaching the problem from a radically different angle, or giving them a written explanation to mull over until we next meet.

Outside of academia, I enjoy reading classic novels, writing commentary and short stories, and going to church.
