Certified Tutor

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's degree in Chemical and Natural Gas Engineering. I have a history of working with students of different backgrounds and age groups, ranging from 4th graders to college level students. I would say that the common denominator for me, in all of my tutorials and interactions with these various groups of students is my desire to pass knowledge across and the mutual satisfaction gained when I have helped a student or students to understand whichever materials were been covered.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I prefer to take it one step at a time. I ensure that my student understands a particular concept before moving to the next one.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would start by introducing myself. Then, I would let the student introduce him/herself before going over their expectations from the session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would do that by going through various independent learning strategies with the student.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, I and the student would map out different goals and milestones as early as possible. These goals and milestones would be designed in such a way that they can be easily attainable. That way, the student would see attaining those goals as success, thus easily remaining motivated to attain the other ones progressively.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

My sole aim would be to ensure that the student understands what has been taught. In order to achieve this, I would use as many examples as are possible. I would also employ pictorial aids, as well as relating the concept to real-life scenarios.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would show them how to read and understand in bits.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

There are a few of them. However, it is important to help build the student's confidence in the subject/topic area as early as possible.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Students usually struggle with subjects that they find abstract. I would paint real-life scenarios and also start off with easier examples.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The easiest way to find out if a student understands material is to evaluate the concepts from the material at the end of the tutorial. This can be done with quizzes or homework.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

To build a student's confidence in a subject, I would start from the basics of the subject and gradually proceed at the student's pace.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's needs, I would start out by having a dialogue with the student. It is very important to know what the student's expectations are and understand how much they know beforehand.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I tend to be very flexible. I believe every student has a preferred mode of learning. By having a dialogue with the student, I can tweak and adapt my teaching method to whichever one that suits the student best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use recommended texts, prepared notes and slides.
