Certified Tutor

Tutoring has been a passion for me since elementary school when I was first given the opportunity to aid my fellow students who were having difficulty. Since then I have always looked for ways to help those around me learn whether in professional or personal settings. I feel that learning is a major part of life, and knowledge is power. It gives me great joy to share what I have learned in life with others in order to give them the power to enjoy life a little more. Throughout the years I have helped other understand Math, English, Computer Basics and Spanish with great results with students from age 10 to 37. These experiences have taught me the importance of meeting the student at mutual grounds in order to build a team of student and teacher.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe teaching is a mutual experience where both the teacher and student learn from each other. It is important to give students the opportunity to make choices to solve the problem in order to truly facilitate the learning process and not just reciting information.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Typically, in the first session with a student I would introduce myself and allow the student to introduce themselves. I would look to do a brief evaluation of their experience in the particular subject and try to determine their learning personality.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by encouraging them to find solutions through trial and error mixed with critical thinking rather than reciting information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by tracking their progress with them and making achievable goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would work with the student patiently and maybe try different methods of reaching the goal of understanding the skill or concept.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

One of the most important strategies is to make the student feel comfortable in the learning environment. They need to know that we are a team working together to achieve a goal.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help them by taking it one step at a time and showing them through positive reinforcement that any struggle can be overcome little by little.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I believe it is important to test the students to ensure they understand the material. I feel the best way is through hands-on demonstrations that apply to real life.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build a student's confidence in a subject by showing them their progress and helping them set achievable goals for themselves.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I believe the best way to evaluate a student's needs is through communication and observation.
