Learning should be a lifelong endeavor. Nurturing self-expression, fostering critical thinking, and promoting discussion are the main tenets of my teaching pedagogy. I believe that the best teachers are the ones who wouldn't want to be doing anything else- recognizing and heeding the opportunity to foster growth and a love for learning in people. I began my career in education during my senior year at the University of Oregon. I tutored ESL to international students, taught fourth graders philosophy, and taught creative writing to juvenile delinquents. After I earned my BA in English, I left the US to teach ESL abroad in Thailand, Myanmar, France, and Morocco to all ages. I am an avid reader and writer. I enjoy surfing, yoga, and golf. I also love watching and analyzing movies, hiking, and nature.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I aim to instill a lifelong passion for learning in my students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn what motivates the student, and what the student wants, needs, and requires to better implement their future learning sessions. Learn about successful and unsuccessful learning strategies the student has tried. Find out interests, strengths, weaknesses, and talents.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By nurturing self-expression, fostering critical-thinking, and promoting discussion. The student must learn how to form and analyze arguments.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By discussing the implications of what the student is currently studying and helping him or her to see the big picture.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Creatively come to various approaches and angles.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Discover what allows the student to make their own connections by perhaps approaching similar concepts in real-life situations.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Staying patient, upbeat, calm, and involved.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to find parallels with another subject they enjoy.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Discussion, comparative literature, real-life examples, and artwork.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

With encouragement, personal anecdote struggles, and positive comments.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I learn everything I can about the student: lifestyle, daily habits, passions, dreams, goals, talents, weaknesses, difficulties, strengths, and whatever else might teach me something about the learning style of a student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Through creatively approaching different strategies and methods.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Articles, essays, highlighter, paper, pen, coloring pencils or markers, craft paper, PowerPoints, movies, TV shows, short stories, and novels.
