Certified Tutor

Hello! My name is Efrain Velasco and I am 21 years old.

I am a Mathematics major and study Physics and Discrete Mathematical structures/Analytic Calculus very often.

I spend most of my time at school, but when I am home I like being on the computer to study.

My computer is also the main focus of my entertainment, education, and communication, so I am usually available frequently when I float around the PC.

The best way to set up a session with me is to email me with an exact time and date of appointment, along with the topics being covered in class that we will review during our session. I highly recommend sending me these topics so I can prepare in advance of our session to provide the best possible lesson as possible! 2.71828frain@gmail.com

I am currently enrolled at Glendale Community College but I have attended Arizona State University for a couple of years while I was an intended Physics major.

My current goal in life is to work for a PhD in Mathematics to continue a career in academia to conduct further research on applications of the field.

I am here to spread the truth that lies within Mathematics! The Universe and its infinite peculiarities are a joy to explore!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Together, understanding the infinite and its complexities that heavily reside with our crazy world and its cradle we call the universe.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, and then dive into the general areas of Mathematics which the student is not confident in their ability to proceed on their own.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Repetition of analytic problem solving and common exercises until a satisfactory routine thought process is achieved.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Re-explain in a different manner. The same idea can be reiterated many times and in a much simpler fashion when the student has difficulty catching on.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I don't mind reading aloud!

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Politeness and patience.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Trivia and facts that are fundamental but not intuitive are cool cases to explore for more insight!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Drill exercises. Example problems.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By helping them see that the correct answer can be expressed in a variety of ways.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Understanding grade level and current subject matter comprehension. Simple small-talk can get us on the right page.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pen, pencil, paper, computer and graphics tablet, and possibly a whiteboard.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By refraining from complicated subject-based vocabulary based on prerequisites of the student.
