To help a student become independent, we will do some exercises together, and then I give them assignments at the end of each class. The results they get when I correct the assignment will help me know how much they can learn on their own.

No student is unable to learn anything. It most often depends on how the tutor presents it to them.

I will seek to know about their past, likes and dislikes, and what background knowledge and difficulties they have in the subject concerned.

I will appreciate the little efforts they make and encourage them not to be discouraged when they encounter any difficulties. I will also give them examples of people who have overcome challenging tasks and succeeded even in their academic life.

I will try other ways of presenting the concept, especially by using examples common to them. I will also try to use more practical approaches.

Reading has to do with being able to recognize the different syllables that make up a word. Therefore, I will go back to the basics and teach them how the letters of the alphabet are used to make sounds/syllables by combining consonants and vowels. From here, we will start to build simple words from these syllables, and then gradually move to more complex words and subsequently use these words to form sentences.

The most successful strategies when working with students is to teach them the basics then guide them to build from there, either as individuals or in a group. Students learn a lot better when they are guided to learn than when they are just taught/told.

An easy way to get a student to love a subject they are not excited about is to let them see how helpful that subject is to them, and then use simple practical examples to guide them in understanding the concepts. Also, if you tell the students about the opportunities they may have in future if they learn and succeed in such a subject, most students will be motivated.

To be sure that a student understands the material, I ask them questions as I progress in the lesson. If they can answer most of the questions, that is proof that they are following up the subject matter.

If a student lacks confidence in a subject, I will make them know that the very fact that I learned and succeeded in the subject and can now teach them means it is possible for them too to succeeded. I will also explain to them that the fact that they were able to earn even one point on a test in the past means they can earn 100% someday, as long as they keep building on that ability

Based on what class they are in and what they are supposed to have been taught, I will ask some questions. What he/she is able or unable to answer will guide me as to their needs in the subject. Also, they may be able to tell some particular areas they have been having particular difficulties in.

Once I know a student's needs, I will not focus on teaching them what is expected for that level/class. I will go down to the level of understanding where they are and gradually guide them from there to where they are supposed to be. From here, I can then introduce the new things required for that class.

It's cheaper and easier to understand when examples and material common to the student are used in explaining the subject matter. For example, the kitchen and its utensils can be used as a good example in teachings that have to do with the laboratory and its equipment.
