I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Sapan

Certified Tutor

I am currently a strategy analyst as MasterCard. I have tutored for the past 4-5 years to both college students as well as local Miami high school students. I love working with students because engaging in the process of educating individuals is highly motivational to me and due to that I can't help but motivate my students to learn as well. I believe my experiences have allowed me to become rather successful in tutoring and have taught me how to effectively adapt to various students and how to properly teach them difficult concepts. More so, I have learned how to motivate students who may feel discouraged and have also learned how to create an environment in which the students feels as if they can succeed. Outside of tutoring, I love to exercise, invest in the stock market and learn how to code (I am currently learning Python and R). It is important to realize that in learning, there isn't a single successful way. Rather, each student is unique and their path to success is too.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to actively engage with the student. I believe the best way to get a student to learn is to first explain the concept via theory and examples. Then, the next step is to have the student complete a few examples on their own. Lastly, I believe the student should attempt to teach or explain the concept back to me to prove that they have learned the concept at hand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would make sure to make a solid foundation with them so that they feel comfortable with my teaching style and with asking questions. If my teaching style isn't effective for them, then I would ask them what I can do differently so that they can learn more efficiently. More so, if I establish an environment in which they feel comfortable asking questions, then they will progress much faster.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe I can help a student become an independent learner by providing them with the necessary foundation in order to feel comfortable with the subject. Many times, students require tutors because they are either uncomfortable with the subject or because they are afraid to make mistakes. However, with my teaching style I make sure students learn that in the beginning stages, it is okay to make mistakes. If anything, mistakes will help us learn faster. With this knowledge, students will then be able to go on their own and begin to learn independently.
