Certified Tutor

Teaching is a lifelong process of learning about new philosophies and new strategies, learning from the parents and community, learning from colleagues, and especially learning from the children. Children have taught me to open my mind and my heart to the joys, the innocence, and the diversity of ideas in the world. Because of this, I will never forget how to smile with the new, cherish the old, and laugh often.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Communicate with the parents and the student about themselves and the desired outcomes of our work together. I would also administer a pre-assessment to gain information on the student's strengths and identify areas of concern if there are any.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Build their confidence in their abilities. Provide them with tools and strategies to build productive perseverance.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Be supportive, encouraging, persistent, and being gentle but firm.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Provide scaffolds and supports to help them master the skill and concept. I would also be patient with them and provide them a variety of questions and types of questions to help build their understanding as well as confidence.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Break the passage into smaller chunks. Rephrase into less complex terms and have the student restate the reading in their own words.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Be enthusiastic about the subject myself, and build their confidence in their own abilities.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Wait time, rereading questions, work out similar problems, and pre-reading. Frequent checks for understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Provide a variety of scaffolded examples to build success and confidence before moving on to more difficult and challenging problems. Assist and prompt as needed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Talking to student and parent. Administer a pre-assessment, observe students while working, and analyze student work samples.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If a student is struggling with the assigned task, provide support. If the work is not challenging to the student, then provide the student with more complex application activities.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the grade level and abilities of the student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I embrace teaching as an opportunity to uplift, inspire, and empower. I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a safe, structured, caring, and stimulating environment in which to learn. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential by providing such an environment.
