Xavier
Certified Tutor
My name is Xavier. I will be graduating from Wake Forest University with my Masters in Mathematics in August. I've starting tutoring math in 2008 during my undergraduate days at NC State. Since then I've worked as a tutor at Forsyth Technical Community College, Wake Forest, and also privately to high school students in the Winston-Salem area. Throughout my years as math I've grown to enjoy it more and more! As someone who know what it is like to struggle I am very patient with my students and have no problem explaining things multiple times if needed.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that a good conceptual understanding of a topic rather than focusing on the steps to answer a question is key.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During the first session with a student my first priority is to gauge where the student is. If they do not give me specific areas where they need help with, I'll throw out some relevant information to see how they feel about them. Once I think I have a good idea of where they are, I like to start by either defining some key terms or write out relevant properties that will be helpful to understanding said topic.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I believe that working through practice problems with the student is essential to becoming more independent. I think that with the extra practice, students will have more opportunities to learn from mistakes.
