What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe learning should be fun. Make it relatable to something the student is interested in to help make it memorable. Find out what the student is interested in while keeping on task is the best way to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk about their background, interests and find out their progress goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Practice with things they'll experience day to day to make it relatable.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Find out best methods for learning. Either via homework, practice assignments, listening videos, or tests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Continue to build on strengths and keep him/her motivated. It's easy to get frustrated but if you persevere little wins help build confidence.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Work with listening skills while reading so that pronunciation and real life scenarios can be utilized.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Positive reinforcement, encouragement and a good attitude.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Utilize an example of something they do understand or enjoyed and try to build from there.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Redundancy. If a student feels that they understand, leave the material and go on, then go back to it at the end of the lesson to be sure.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Make sure they feel comfortable speaking, work on pronunciation and to know that making mistakes are the best way to learn. Little by little students will build confidence with what they do know, rather than what they're struggling with.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Continue to evaluate. If a student had a goal in mind initially, continue to discuss progress and make sure they are satisfied with the pace and material of the lesson plan.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Check in with a student regularly to be sure they are following along and feel comfortable yet challenged.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Lesson book, work book, online videos and novels in Spanish.
