Greetings! I have been tutoring students of all ages for several years now. I love getting to know learners one-on-one, discovering their strengths and their potentials. My past students have come from a wide variety of learning backgrounds and abilities, so I am very comfortable with diversity in every way.

My professional experience in the classroom gives me a good idea of the expectations placed on students throughout school. School is tough (especially standardized testing), but you can do it. I'm looking forward to learning with you soon!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In order to get to know a student better, I would ask questions about their own learning styles and the content they are currently working on. To get the most out of our sessions together, I want to get a sense of who you are as a learner and figure out a plan for our sessions together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Conversations, questions, and strategies. Sometimes we learn best by just talking things through. Sometimes we learn a lot from asking and answering questions. We always learn when we know the strategies that work well for our own learning styles.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning is a co-constructed experience, and that teaching is the tool by which specific content can be explored and retained.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Learning happens most authentically when a student has inner motivation and a true desire to learn. I want to know why my students do what they do; that knowledge helps me to remind each individual of the motivation they have but sometimes forget.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Often, difficulties with certain skills and concepts come from a misunderstanding of a more basic foundational concept. When necessary, I go back with students to foundations and work with them to understand how that part works to support the whole concept they are working toward. Knowing how the details connect to the big picture is a great way to retain a fuller knowledge of any concept or skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Sometimes reading comprehension requires new strategies, and other times it requires practice and accountability. I am able to provide both for individual students through discussion, questions, and observation.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To get excited about any subject, learners need to see how it is relevant to their world. By knowing a student's passions and goals, I am able to help them find the connections between the frustrating subject and what is important to them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I find that the use of effective, open-ended questions not only strengthens students' understanding of the material, but also allows me to see where they have potential to fill in their knowledge gaps. I use quizzes and practice tests as well, but I understand learners better through my own questioning and discussion.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

One way of encouraging confidence in a student is through consistent record keeping. When students can look back on their progress and see how far they've come, they naturally become confident in themselves as learners.
