Erin: Harland Terrace tutor
Certified Tutor
I have certifications in mathematics (6-12) and computer programming (6-12), as well as a Master's degree in Mathematics Education. I taught high school for five years, and then chose to stay home with my children while they were little. I continued to work as a tutor during this time, and now that my children are in school, I am looking to expand my tutoring hours and services.
I enjoy the challenge of finding new ways to teach and explain math concepts to students. I also have experience working with special needs students, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. If the first attempt at explaining a topic does not work, I keep working to find methods that will match my students' unique learning styles.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students can learn, and it is the job of the tutor and student to work together to discover which method(s) work best. If one method does not work, then we will try another until we find one that does work.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would find out a little about their math background (what courses have they taken, how have they done), their current math course, and what their concerns about their current class are. We would also discuss what their goals for the course and for tutoring are, and what needs to be done to achieve these goals.
