Over the last 20 years I have been helping to close the achievement gap that in PreK to 5th grade students as well as struggling readers. My diverse background and openness to get to the root of the concern makes me a unique individual.
I believe it is truly important to build up the self esteem of clients while helping them to achieve their goal. If they do not believe in themselves or what they are doing the entire process will be in vain
During this time I have also had the pleasure of supporting leadership teams bridge the gap in their school community through engaging coaching and consulting practices the promote out of the box thinking.

In my spare time I love spending time with my children and grandchildren; cooking/baking and traveling; learning new skills, being active and helping the youth in my church community, meditation

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that there is no 1 way to learn anything! My belief is that an educator will utilize varied modalities related to that particular scholar until that scholar fully comprehends. If you don't know your student then you are not driving instruction.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will ask the scholar about his/her likes; what they find difficult about the subject/topic; what is the best way for them to learn; what strategies and techniques have already been utilized?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a scholar become and independent learner by creating student centered tutoring sessions. Although I am providing instruction, the foundation of it should come from the scholar.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a scholar to stay motivated by being open and sharing some of my own "pitfalls" in education as a student and maybe even as an adult. I believe it helps to be an open book. Many scholars believe we, as educators, have no errors, etc.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would see what strategies or concepts were already tried and how they were introduced, and then would use other modalities or maybe even re-introduce the strategies already tried in a different way

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Through the use of graphic organizers, having the scholar summarize what they have read little by little (depending on the deficiency). It is also helpful to utilize visuals and help scholars make real life connections.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Visual aids, videos, audio, hands on activities, varied writing activities, making real-world connections.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I have to show excitement first. I believe this is the foundation.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Comprehension questions, mini quizzes, visual aids, writing activities, flashcards, memory games.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcements such as: You got this! You can do it! Great job! Wow! That was awesome! You are so smart! You did a great job! I even got stuck on that question.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Watching their behavior (resistance, rebellion, etc.), Analyzing their data from school (report card, quizzes, etc.) Assessing how they answer questions (replies such as I don’t know, I’m not sure, etc. Also speaking with the parent If allowed, speaking with their classroom instructor

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt according to their learning based off of our conversations and the needs assessment conducted.
