Certified Tutor

I hold a M.A. in Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, and a dual B.A. from Mercyhurst University in Political Science and Sociology. I specialized in Global Health/Human Security, and conflict management/resolution. I worked as a tutor for over 6 years, with a range of individuals from high school students to working adults.

I traveled a lot growing up; I am French, studied in Germany, played sports in England, and graduated high school in Canada are some examples. Fluent in French and English, I also have a working knowledge of Spanish (lived in Spain for a while)... I love traveling.

I love to cook, play the saxophone (and rugby). I am genuine and know that studying can be hard at times!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone learns differently through his/her own tricks and shortcuts. To know your student's personality can be the key to helping them relate to a subject or the material at hand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Break the ice/ Establish a comfort, learning the environment and learning about the student and his/her expectations. Test current knowledge and establish the course for the next session.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Relate to his anxiety and reorient his concerns toward a solution, rather than freezing up.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

To reach him and make him understand the importance of learning the material and beyond.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would repeat the material through different angles of teaching.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would take apart the reading and talk about small sections of it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To relate on a personal level, which helps establish a trust and a desire to work.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Engage with the student and make the subject seem interesting, and make him/her believe that it is enjoyable when done in a particular way.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Short quizzes in the following session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Make him understand that it is acceptable to struggle, but that all struggles can be surpassed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through discussion and short exercises.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By assessing the evolution of results, and different ways that are more effective for retention.
