Jillian
Certified Tutor
I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn and excel. A Presidential Honors Scholar at New York University, I have benefited from many opportunities in my education, and I aspire to use my experiences to teach others. I have taken the SAT, ACT, and several AP exams, and I am a recipient of an award from the French Department at NYU.
I first became passionate about tutoring in high school, when I would assist other students in mathematics. I also have experience working with elementary school students in a bilingual New York City public school. One of the aspects of tutoring that I always look forward to is when students are able to confidently join their peers.
In order to succeed in math, I approach each problem as a puzzle, and I encourage my students to try this out.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe everyone has the potential to excel given the proper environment. Working with a tutor, a student is able to receive lessons customized to his or her learning style. Most importantly, it is essential to create an environment in which questions are encouraged.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Before I begin teaching, the student and I discuss our overarching goals for the sessions as a whole. I then ask how they learn best and we try a few methods during the first session to determine what works best with their learning style.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Almost all subjects can be in some way connected to an activity or topic that the student has a passion for. Uncovering this connection can lead him or her to view the topic in a new light. When learning becomes enjoyable, the student is less inclined to call it quits.
