Edinburgh ERB WrAP Tutoring FAQ
The ERB Writing Assessment Program, or ERB WrAP, is a standardized writing exam given to students in grades three through twelve. The ERB WrAP analyzes students' ability to write prose by having them produce an essay in response to a standardized prompt. Each essay is then graded by two trained readers against a rubric appropriate to the student's grade level. Detailed scores are then returned to the schools to aid teachers in helping their students become better writers. Unlike many standardized writing tests in which students are expected to write an entire essay in one session, the ERB WrAP consists of two separate sessions given on two consecutive days; on the first day, students are expected to generate rough drafts of their essays, and on the second day they are expected to refine their compositions and produce their final drafts. The format of the test can be particularly challenging, even if a student is proficient at reading, which is why an ERB WrAP tutor can help.
In addition, the test is distinguished by its focus on challenging students to write in different discursive modes at different levels of difficulty, and adapting its grading rubric to each. For example, whereas the elementary-level exam asks third- and fourth-graders to write a narrative, the secondary-level exam for ninth- and tenth-graders asks them to produce a piece of persuasive writing. These two features -- a two-day format and a variable prompt type -- combine to produce an exam unlike any other standardized test, and can present students with unique difficulties if they are not adequately prepared for the specific challenges of the ERB WrAP.
Students who do not typically make use of pre-writing strategies like brainstorming and outlining may find themselves lost on the first day of the exam as they construct their rough draft, and students without strong revision skills may stall on the second day of the exam as they review the work they produced the day before. To help your student bolster their writing skills and become familiar with the format of the ERB WrAP, consider personalized tutoring. All across the country, Varsity Tutors connects students with ERB WrAP tutoring customized to address their particular academic needs. Better yet, they can meet at the best possible time, to accommodate a busy schedule, and at any location, including one's home. Students can even meet a tutor face-to-face online. A student can also feel free to ask any questions they want, as the lessons are specifically tailored to their needs.
Whether a student struggles most with developing and supporting their claims or using a variety of different sentence structures and appropriate vocabulary, an experienced tutor can help build upon the foundational skills a child possesses to develop those that may be lacking. A tutor can analyze a student's current skill level and design a series of customized learning plans that focus on helping them master the aspects of writing that give them the most trouble. As all ERB WrAP tutoring takes place in a one-on-one environment, students can work through targeted exercises at whatever pace best allows them to master each concept. Each student can receive immediate feedback on their work and answers to questions as they arise, minimizing confusion and providing elaboration on any concepts that may still seem unfamiliar. ERB WrAP tutoring can help a student prepare to demonstrate all of their writing skills on the exam, and can help them prepare to succeed in future courses that require the written expression of ideas in a concise, well-reasoned manner.

Recent Edinburgh ERB WrAP Tutoring Session Notes
At today's session, the student and I began reviewing the math concepts covered on the SAT. I feel that going through the actual material covered in the math section will help him more than simply reworking problems that he has had trouble in the past.
In addition, the student and I continued to go over vocabulary words, giving special attention to word roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
The student and I had our first meeting today, covering the principles of the ACT English and Reading sections. I determined that we should start with English, as he needs a bit of practice with his tone and rhetorical skills. Overall, a terrific first effort.
We kept working on the reading section. I advised the student to be reading some of the shorter articles from different magazines every day to try to increase his reading pace and comprehension. He does well when he has plenty of time. This is where he's making the most significant strides; he occasionally forgets a formula or gets stuck but his pacing is really good and the more he practices, the better he'll do.
Today we continued working on the science section. She is improving now that she's had some practice with it and doesn't panic as much. We also did a timed writing section, and she did quite well on that, scoring a 30.
We continued to complete practice tests in both English and Reading. We also are covering SAT vocabulary alphabetically now with worksheets that I create (i.e. this session was "A," next session will be "B").
Today we went over the rest of a Math test that I assigned the student, which took about half the session, and then we went over an ACT Science test together. We went passage-by-passage and worked on the problems together, discussing strategy of how to outline the passage before approaching problems and why the correct answers were correct.
