During my session with this student we worked on the article, "The Sixth Extinction," discussing recent scientific findings and theories about endangered animals, and focusing on key vocabulary words from the article. He struggled most with the vocabulary word list which I had pulled out from the article, but was able to infer the meaning of the words through context clues and my coaching. His attitude was positive toward the material we reviewed, and he seemed very excited about the article topic since it focused on science rather than history. For extra practice, he is to finish filling in the Word Find ditto that accompanies the article, continue working with his words workbook, and send me any articles he finds online which he is interested in reading for our next session.

Today I brought articles for the student that discussed the pros and cons to allowing cell phones in schools. She read the articles, and decided that she thought that cell phones should be allowed in schools. She found meaningful quotes from the article that supported her thesis. She then wrote a strong essay with a thesis, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a strong concluding paragraph. After she wrote the essay, we proofread it together and then compared it to the rubrics her teachers had given her.

Today we worked on several reading comprehension worksheets. These included main idea summary exercises, vocabulary exercises, narrative elements, and recall of detail from text from memory. We talked about meditation for improved focus and concentration.

The student and I worked on the third chapter of the leprechaun story today. I emphasized ways to weave exposition into the action of a story, and the importance of presenting sensory details to make the events more vivid. She seemed to enjoy the writing, and we wrote a lot.

Great session today. We worked on Reading Comprehension multiple choice worksheets, and went over vocab activities and punctuation exercises. We then worked on her writing assignment over the weekend, and she did a good job and expanded on what she wrote. We then spent the last 15 minutes or so reading out loud from The Hunger Games.

During today's session the student focused on reviewing two sets of flashcards, two reading passages and phonics sounds that focused on the ck and the nk sounds. Initially she read tentatively, at times mispronouncing words that are usually very easy for her to spell and pronounce. Once encouraged, she began to read louder and quicker, showing her mastery. She is great at correcting herself when she knows she has mispronounced a word, will attempt to correct her pronunciation and tries to sound out the words she doesn't know. I encouraged the student to remember to find the smaller words in the larger words, i.e: rank is in the word drank.
