I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, with an M.A. from U of T and B.A. from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta. I taught at University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) for three years and Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) for twenty years before going to the Far East, where I taught university six years in South Korea and eleven years in Japan. I was a full professor at Miyazaki International University and then Doshisha University in Kyoto. After returning to Canada, I taught six years at the University of Waterloo. I have taught mostly first-year writing courses both in Canada and abroad, though I am also passionate about teaching literature (Canadian, American, and British). I have also published two books and many articles and enjoy teaching creative writing as well. My experience teaching international students, both in Canada and in Korea and Japan, has taught me a lot about other cultures, and I was Coordinator of Culture and Language Studies at Renison University College, University of Waterloo. I love working with students from all over the world.

I am co-founder of a poetry centre in my hometown in Ontario and am always busy writing. Most of this writing is scholarly, and these days I write a lot of book reviews. As well, I love gardening. When I was younger, I was an avid equestrian and enjoyed jumping horses. I am also a dog lover.
