I received my Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry from Cedarville College (now Cedarville University) in 1998 and my Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky in 2007. While I was completing my dissertation, I was hired by Cedarville as a Chemistry professor in 2003 and have been teaching there ever since. I primarily teach an introductory chemistry class for nonmajors, Analytical Chemistry I and II, Environmental Chemistry, and Forensic Science courses.
I love teaching people chemistry. I especially like engaging with students who are new to the field or have had bad experiences in the past and help them understand and succeed in Chemistry. My strategy is to provide concrete strategies for solving problems with a focus on why the strategy works. I want my students not only know what do to get the right answer to a problem; I want them to know why those procedures lead them to the right answer. That way they can solve not only the immediate problem they are working on, but any other similar problem. Most of Chemistry is simply the application of a set of basic principles, so I try to help my students understand those principles and walk them through how they apply to the specific problem they are dealing with.
