Personal Statement: Tutoring Philosophy for NBDHE Preparation
Lynn Russell, RDH, EdD

With more than three decades of experience in clinical dental hygiene, higher education, and academic leadership, I approach tutoring for the NBDHE as both a privilege and a responsibility. My philosophy centers on empowering students to become confident, competent, and reflective practitioners who not only pass their board exams but also internalize the knowledge and clinical judgment essential for ethical, evidence-based care.

I believe in meeting students where they areacademically, emotionally, and professionally. Each learner brings a unique background and set of experiences, and I strive to create a supportive environment that respects and builds on that individuality. By employing active learning strategies, case-based questions, and guided review techniques, I help students transition from rote memorization to critical thinking and long-term retention.

My approach is grounded in adult learning theory and the understanding that motivation is a key factor. I aim to demystify the board exam process, reduce anxiety through structured preparation, and cultivate a growth mindset. I emphasize early diagnostic assessments, frequent feedback, and strategic study planning tailored to each student's strengths and weaknesses.

As someone who has mentored students across various academic and clinical settings, I recognize the importance of holistic support. I integrate wellness, time management, and test-taking strategies into tutoring sessions so students feel equipped not only with content mastery but also the resilience to perform under pressure.

Ultimately, my goal is not only to prepare students to pass the NBDHE, but to help them build the habits of inquiry, discipline, and reflection that will sustain them throughout their professional lives.

Hobbies

As a proud member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), I believe deeply in professional accountability and continued development. I integrate these values into my tutoring by encouraging students to view board preparation as part of their broader journey as health professionals committed to quality care, ethics, and service. Beyond my professional roles, I am a grandmother, an avid reader—particularly of suspense and thriller fiction—a devoted Labrador owner, and a lifelong learner myself. These personal roles continually inform my work as an educator. I know that success is not just about intellect, but also about balance, resilience, and support. I strive to model those qualities in every interaction with students, always reminding them that their well-being is just as important as their academic achievement. Ultimately, I tutor to make a difference—to nurture, to challenge, and to celebrate each student's growth. Helping them cross the finish line of the NBDHE with pride and purpose is one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional life.
