Shilpi: Suffolk County tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a Ph.D. candidate in Molecular Biology at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC with a deep passion for science education and student mentorship. My academic and research experiences have shown me how transformative personalised learning can be, not just for academic success, but for building confidence and curiosity. Helping students navigate challenging scientific concepts and seeing their growth over time is what fuels my passion for tutoring.
I have several years of experience working with students at the high school, undergraduate, and early graduate levels. This includes teaching laboratory-based microbiology and molecular biology courses, mentoring students in independent research projects, and tutoring one-on-one in subjects such as biology, genetics, and environmental science. I enjoy working with a wide range of learners, especially those preparing for academic transitions or looking to strengthen their foundational understanding.
My academic journey has centered around the life sciences, particularly in microbiology, virology, and molecular biology. I specialize in tutoring subjects such as general biology, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology and environmental science. Among these, molecular biology is my favourite to teach because of its powerful ability to explain how life works at the most fundamental level and because it connects to so many exciting fields, from medicine to biotechnology.
My tutoring style is supportive, interactive, and student-centered. I believe in meeting students where they are and adapting my teaching strategies to suit their individual learning styles. I use a variety of approaches such as visual aids, real-world examples, analogies, and active questioning to help students grasp concepts clearly and retain information effectively. I also focus on building problem-solving skills and scientific reasoning, so students gain confidence not just in what they know, but in how they think.
Outside of academia, I enjoy volunteering in science outreach programs, and reading about science communication and global health. These interests help me stay connected to the world beyond the lab and bring fresh perspectives into my teaching.
