Karen Elaine: Pawtucket tutor
Certified Tutor
I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in English and History from the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB). At UMB I also received my teacher training in writing and began teaching while I was still a graduate student. I knew right away that teaching writing was my passion and that has never waned.
After I graduated with my master's degree, I had the opportunity to take an interim position as a writing center director and fell in love with working with students in 1:1 relationships. It was in these relationships where I was witness to students growing as thinkers and writers the most. In writing centers, I also had opportunities to assist students with academic writing from different disciplines such as economics, nursing, business, social work, and technology. I have expertise in research writing and APA and MLA documentation styles.
In addition to working in writing centers, I also have many years experience teaching writing in the classroom to students of all levels and backgrounds. Over my teaching career, I have held positions at highly selective private schools, public colleges and universities. I have also tutored high school students from public, charter, and private schools. I continue to engage my students to become stronger writers and strive to do their best work whether they are preparing for college, experiencing college for the first time or in graduate school. I also have experience in working with adults who may be struggling with writing in the workplace.

I love spending time with my family and I have recently started writing my family history. I grew up in Texas so I have lots of stories to tell! When I am not writing, I am reading. I love to read American History and fiction from a wide range of writers and time periods. Right now I am enjoying Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.
