Personal statement
I believe tutoring needs to be engaging, individualized, and fun. My background in teaching early childhood and elementary means that I can bring my knowledge of phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension strategies to improve reading skills. I have the ability to align lessons to standards, interpret data to help move students to their next learning goal, and help students love reading. My background includes a masters in reading from Pittsburg State University and a bachelors in elementary education from Missouri Southern State University. I have fifteen years experience in education, including four as a reading support teacher in a Title -1 school. I have worked with students from various backgrounds such as students who are ELLs, students who have IEPs, and students with behavioral issues. No matter who I'm teaching to, I find ways to make the material engaging and meaningful to students' lives and goals. I also have background in tutoring in elementary math from basic numeracy and foundational skills to algebraic thinking. A fun fact about me is that I used to be an editor of a campus magazine and newspaper!
