It is with clear happiness to me to teach chemistry and biochemistry and to teach with passion. George Washington Burnap once revealed the three secret principles of happiness: "The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." I deeply immerse myself into these three principles when I am teaching. I do have something to do -teach and specifically teach chemistry and biochemistry; I love teaching and love teaching chemistry and biochemistry and finally, I hope to shift students' perspectives toward chemistry/biochemistry from the dark zone to a brighter and more sensible understanding of the concepts.
I am grateful for all the chemistry and biochemistry courses I taught since I graduated with Ph.D. in chemistry from Wayne State University in 2010. My real self now as a chemistry/biochemistry instructor is shaped by what I have been through with each course and with each student. I believe the teaching statement is framed by many experiences and lessons learned during teaching. I strive to enhance my teaching style and methods for the benefit of the students with high consideration for the special educational need of each.
As a teaching assistant professor, my main goal is to ensure students will retain the information. The more understandable a material the more it will be absorbed easily by students, and the more exciting a material the more cheerful students will digest it. The hardest part for the instructor is to shake away the negative feelings toward chemistry/biochemistry from students. I am deeply interested to study the reasons behind students struggling in chemistry and biochemistry courses. Tutoring students would give me more opportunities to assess the challenges that students go through to understand these two topics. The influence I am looking for in students is mainly to supercharge their abilities to learn, to learn with joy, and to lead them to follow more productive study habits.
In addition to teaching, I enjoy reading and cooking. No need to mention the benefits of reading; the more we read the deep version of oneself is refined and sharpened to embrace others with greatness. On the other side, I am influenced by being a chemist and chemistry is cooking. I apply this tactic in the kitchen. I am pleased to cook and even play around with recipes to be more creative with an emphasis on having a rich healthy diet as I advise students in my metabolic biochemistry course.
Students are affected by the personality of an instructor which plays an important factor to inspire and motivate students to digest a topic regardless of how intensive and overwhelming it would be. Conclusively, greatness in teaching chemistry and biochemistry is a hybrid of mastered teaching skills, high knowledge, and a perfect personality.
