I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a sophomore at Sarah Lawrence College studying Literature and Fiction Writing. I have experience volunteering with Pre-K to 3rd grade students at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto. I am most passionate about English and Literature as these subjects carry broad implications and applications for the "real world", an element of learning that I consider very important. I am also passionate about any medium of art, and believe it to be vital to the upbringing of young minds. My teaching philosophy consists of creating a judgement-free learning environment, where the student is encouraged to ask whatever questions may come without worrying about not fitting the very narrow standards of what a "good student" sounds like. I believe learning minds need their content to be presented in a way that is personal to them, that includes their lives and interests as key takeaways from each lesson. How can we expect children to care about school if it does not care about them?

Hobbies

Though my main passion is creative fiction writing, I also enjoy exploring other forms, like poetry and nonfiction. Topics I'm passionate about that can be found in my writing include cultural criticism and the fame industry, mother-daughter relationships, purity culture, Anne Carson's modern mythology, and Buddhism. I've always been passionate about the visual arts, particularly painting and drawing (I've always been the kid who doodled all over their notes!). Art is central to my worldview and I incorporate aesthetic criticism into everything I do. Some other hobbies include cooking, journaling, meditation, and hiking. My idea of a perfect day would consist of going on a hike and listening to my favorite podcast.
