As a life-long educator, I have actively sought out ways to improve my knowledge base regarding strategies to help students with math and reading.
To help achieve these goals, I have earned a Master's Degree as well as Elementary Math and Reading specialist certifications and National Board Certification. Other training which I have put into practice are Reading Recovery (individualized early childhood reading intervention), Singapore Math and Responsive Classroom.
As a former elementary classroom teacher, Title I teacher, educational consultant, workshop presenter, and blog author, my passion has been to bring strategies to students (and teachers) which are motivating and promote deep understanding of concepts.
Regarding math, this often involves starting out with hands-on materials and pictorial models before moving to more abstract thinking. I help students explain their thinking and guide them to work toward greater independence. And I love to use games and virtual manipulatives as a method of practice! There are multiple strategies for solving problems, and I am experienced in modeling and teaching students how to successfully do them.
With reading, a goal is to help students self-monitor and self-correct. They learn ways to decode words (simple and complex), and how to apply that with text and writing, as well as improve comprehension and fluency.
Right now, I am only offering online assistance. I can use Zoom or Varsity Tutor's program. Both allow me to upload materials or resources and see each other face-to-face.
I have a calm, quiet personality . . . but I have the ability to motivate and encourage students. Because of my extensive background with students (KG-5th), I have been able to share strategies with students (teachers and parents, too), that were previously unknown to them - but do not require special programs or purchased materials. After showing some 5th graders a multiplication strategy called "doubling and halving," one student said, "I love this! Where have you been all my life?"
My husband and I moved to the Tucson area recently to be closer to family. We are happy to be here! I am eager to continue my educational career and provide some guidance to students and families.

Right now, one of my main interests is interacting with my 10 year old grandson! I enjoy nature (easy hikes and great scenery) and working with plants and gardening. As a long-time educator, I also find it interesting to research and create educational resources in my spare time. Also high on my list is home decorating projects, even those that involve sewing and crafts. I definitely like to "stay busy!"
