I am an undergraduate in my third year of studying environmental and marine science at Boston University. During the past year of my undergraduate career, I have worked as an assistant teacher and tutor for an introductory earth science course. As a part of this program I had the opportunity to take a STEM education course that taught me many pedagogical skills and theories regarding childhood development and comprehension. I am most confident in my ability to tutor in STEM-oriented classes, as those are the courses in which I excel and have the most experience.
I have always had a special interest in education and activism. Especially in my field, being so intertwined with political science and social justice, the ability to communicate and educate others is crucial. Last summer, I worked at an environmental science oriented day camp for children ages 6-12, where we incorporated educational curriculum and lesson plans into the daily activities. I also spent two summers working social justice summer camp with children ages 13 and 14. What I learned most from these experiences is how important imagination is when writing lesson plans and communicating with my students. Not only does it make the material and the experience more memorable, but it exercises creativity, which I believe is a muscle that needs to be built and maintained.
