Henry: Henrico County tutor

Certified Tutor

Experience: I am a recent graduate from the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a BS in Biology. During my undergrad, I had many student teaching experiences and outreach events that helped me effectively communicate with a variety of ages. I participated in the Learning Assistant program at RIT, where I taught Cellular and Molecular Biology, and General and Analytical Chemistry. Through this highly involved program, student teachers are paired with lecturers to help teach a course. They run weekly workshops to answer questions, help come up with classroom activities, take a pedagogy course to improve teaching skills, and conduct research to improve the classroom. I was also a TA for an Organic Chemistry lecture, where I ran weekly workshops where we solved problems with students, and met with my mentor to troubleshoot.

As mentioned, I also have experience with various age groups. This included leading hands on activities to teach 4th graders about food ecosystems, to teaching families about the structure of DNA at RIT's yearly festival. I learned I have a passion for teaching, and love helping others!

Philosophy: I believe that tutoring is a two way street, where my student and I work together to solve problems, and to help them understand the subject matter. The two of us will actively delve into the subject matter through worksheets, videos and creating models that work for the student. Through my experience as a Learning Assistant, I learned that students truly learn best when they're actively engaged in the learning process. This means that worksheets, videos, and activities will be integral to my sessions. All in all, I believe that my job as an instructor is to help guide my students to the correct answer - not just to tell them. This might take some extra work, but in the end it's worth it, as students come out understanding their subject matter better.

Availability: I am available both online, and to travel. I am currently available (as of 5/23/19):

Sun - 9:00am - 7:00pm
Sat - 2:00pm - 7:30pm

I look forward to meeting with you soon to help meet your or your child's educational needs!
