"Individualism is what makes cooperation worth living." A memorable quote said by Henry Ford, it establishes a tenet that I have been adhering to my whole life (academically, athletically, socially, etc). I believe that every human mind is a 'fingerprint' in the sense that no two people learn, process, and communicate the same exact way. Every individual has the capability of accomplishing a goal; it all comes down to the work that this person is willing to put in, accommodating his/her individualistic mind and lifestyle, to reach that goal. However, it is no secret that tasks aren't always accomplishable on one's own and this is perfectly fine. This is where cooperation between individuals must take place; we are social creatures meant to teach and learn from one another.
My name is Usman Asif and I'm currently a medical student at The George Washington University, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Working as a member of Varsity Tutors will be my first formal experience as a tutor but throughout my life, I have been given several opportunities to partake in this 'mentor' role. Throughout my undergraduate experience, I would informally tutor friends and acquaintances on a multitude of subjects. In college, I was also given the opportunity to mentor children. During the school years, I was a member of an extracurricular organization that worked with the neglected children in the underprivileged local communities and during the summers, I worked at a preschool for special-needs children. In each mentorship scenario, I have been able to provide an interactive atmosphere with open communication and a positive, growth-promoting environment. I carry these traits with me today and work on them daily as a growing student myself.
Aside from just being a student, I'm also passionate about music. I've been playing piano since I was about 4 years old and like to record piano covers occasionally. I'm also quite the basketball fan, both in terms of playing and watching. I believe it is important to stay active, both physically and mentally, and I accomplish this by getting in some form of exercise everyday and some form of reading everyday. I've recently started picking up non-school mandated books again and surprisingly have been enjoying it. It's definitely helped me pull away from that old Netflix addiction.
As for long-term goals, I would like to complete my medical degree and open up my own practice one day. I would like to travel the world at some point and provide medical care, as well as teach medical practices, to underprivileged populations in various countries of the world. I'm excited for this next step. Making learning accessible for everyone is one of my fiery and newfound passions and I look forward to working with you!
