Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate from an undergraduate biology program at Green Mountain College, a liberal arts college in Vermont, having received a B.S. in Biology with honors (Summa cum laude) and minors is both Chemistry and Mathematics. Currently, I work as a research assistant at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, applying molecular biology techniques to study insulin resistance and type II diabetes.
Prior to this current occupation, however, I spent three years working as a Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics tutor in Vermont. In this role, I spent considerable time guiding students through introductory and intermediate biology and chemistry courses, as well as general education mathematics and introductory statistics courses.
In addition to this tutoring experience, I have also had the pleasure of working as the teaching assistant for two undergraduate chemistry courses: "General Chemistry I", and "Organic Chemistry I"; I have always been struck by the elegance and beauty of the biological world as it is organized on the molecular/chemical scale and it is a sincere pleasure to help students see a glimpse of that beauty in their own studies of biology and chemistry.
As such, I tutor in the subjects of biology, chemistry, and basic mathematics and statistics. I also, over the years, have had a tremendous amount of experience using Microsoft Excel for data analysis, entry and modeling and, as a result, am confident in tutoring any individual who needs to learn how to effectively use Excel for any purpose. Though I love tutoring in all of these subjects, tutoring in Chemistry is by far my favorite. Chemistry provides an opportunity to think in every possible mode of thought, from visual-spatial reasoning, to cold, hard, deductive logic, and thus I think it allows for the most creative potential in teaching.
If it is of interest to any students reading this, I'd like to finish this personal statement by giving you a glimpse into who I am outside of work and academia. When I am not tutoring, or working in the lab, I try to spend my time split evenly between exercise and reading. I enjoy equally the feeling of having tired out my body on a strenuous hike or session at the gym and having tired out my mind between the pages of a good book. I love being outside as much as possible, so any excuse to hike, bike, run or simply sit beneath the boughs of a tree is a good one to me.
I hope you find this personal statement useful in determining which tutor is a good fit for you and I wish you luck on your educational journey.
