The summer after my freshman year of college I found myself at home with an abundance of free time and nothing to fill it with. I had already cleared most of my Netflix queue, watched more movies that any film major should and had read all my favorite books - twice. It was in this summer low that I noticed an e-mail about volunteering to help with the teens at my local church.
I have always been a natural leader in the classroom. I take the initiative to answer questions and go out of my way to do more research on a subject. I have always gone above and beyond. That translated to how I acted with other students as well. I always wanted to take my knowledge and share it with others, helping them to have the same understanding that I did. These traits were reason that I thought this volunteer position would be good for me.
To my surprise the position was more than just good for me, it gave me purpose. The feeling I get when I help tutor and aid young people is indescribable. Having just entered adulthood myself, I find that I can better communicate with those younger than me. A fact that translates over to my teaching style as well. No one learns the same way and I feel that by getting to know a student I can better adjust myself to fit their needs.
I am currently a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University with a double major in Cinema and English. I tutor in English, specifically essay writing and literature analysis, and ninth grade and below math. I am looking forward to new tutor opportunities and getting to know my future students.
