Matthew: Richmond Hill tutor
Certified Tutor
Teaching provides me with a means to keep learning about a topic and to invest in the success of the next generation. My favorite subjects to tutor are plant biology and biochemistry because there is a lot to understand on a mechanistic level. I also enjoy tutoring these topics because one of my favorite hobbies is examining plant flora while hiking. Subjects I tutor include biology, biochemistry, life sciences, science, plant biology, and molecular biology. When tutoring I will start by determining what the student needs to know for the class and the goals of the tutoring session. This is followed by determining what the student understands and the gaps in knowledge. From there I attempt to fill any conceptual knowledge gaps and prescribe a study plan for content that needs to be memorized.
For my Bachelor of Science, I majored in biology with a minor in chemistry at Eastern Kentucky University. During this time, I tutored several students in chemistry and organic chemistry. My PhD was in plant biology at Washington University in St. Louis. I spent several summers during my PhD teaching high school students how to work in a lab environment on an independent project. I also was a teaching assistant for an undergraduate class on plant bioengineering as a part of my PhD. It is my privilege to work with students who will use my knowledge for the betterment of their communities and future employers.
