What is your teaching philosophy?
Personalization and patience is key. We all learn differently, and I think that by combining someone's interests into the teaching, it can definitely create a more stimulating and individualized learning experience.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the student and the way they learn best. I would try to answer as many questions as needed, and I would start teaching them in the subject that they needed help with.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By giving them the tools and helping them with the steps that taught them best.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By using items that interests them. For example; jewelry, bouncy balls, beads, etc. I would try to make it fun!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would definitely incorporate learning through play and go over the steps until they really grasped the concept before moving forward.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help them by reading and explaining what happened and asking them open-ended questions.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Personalization, repeating steps until they grasp the concept, taking small breaks and coming back to the subject, and teaching it in different ways.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would give them examples of real-life scenarios - possibly something that they've done that they found to be entertaining - and incorporate their experiences with the subjects.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask open-ended questions, review the material to make sure they understood the steps, and ask them how to do the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Reassurance. I think it's very common for students to think that they are "going to fail" when things get hard, but I think that reassurance and practice makes a world of difference!
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I get to know them, go over their course work, and create a lesson plan to better teach them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By figuring out how they learn best as an individual.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It all depends on the grade level and the material. For math, I may use an item that is interesting to create better examples. It just depends on the individual. Basic items I use are notebooks, pens, pencils, white boards, etc.
