What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe students are most successful when they feel their ideas are valid and worth discussion. When you're excited about the subject matter, the technical elements of writing become much easier to teach.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I will talk with a student to assess what their goals are and what ways I can help them achieve them. This may include help on a specific assignment, or an abstract idea like "I want to improve my grammar when writing."
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
One of the best ways to help a student struggling with reading comprehension is to break a passage or text down into more manageable components. Once a student is a able to focus on a specific area of the reading assignment, we can discuss their understanding of it, moving through the piece slowly to develop a fuller understanding while reading.
