What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student can learn, but it takes a true teacher to understand how they learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to get to know the student. I would like to know their interests and hobbies. I can find ways to relate the information to them on a level that interests them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It's all about asking them questions and getting them into the habit of asking those questions themselves without anyone asking them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

You help a student stay motivated by giving them positive reinforcement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has a problem learning, you find a way to relate the information to the student. If you don't have a way to relate the information to the student, the student will not learn it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are many strategies to use to help a student with reading comprehension. One of the greatest strategies is to ask guiding comprehension questions. You do the student no favors when you just give them answers.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategy is to ask the student what they hope to get out of working with me. This way the student and myself can be on the same page.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The best way to engage a student is to relate the concept to their lives. The students learn more if they are able to see that learning can take place outside of the classroom.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Questions and cycling back through the information is a great technique to use to make it easy to check for understanding.
