Back in 2017, I graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering at California State University Los Angeles.

I have experience tutoring pre-algebra up to pre-calculus. I understand that these math subjects can be difficult so I explain concepts as simply as possible. I have a lot of patience and don't mind taking as long as needed in order for the student to understand the subject.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I teach with the intent of allowing the student to be equipped to teach someone else.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I ask what is the number one thing that is giving the student the most difficulty.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage the student to come to the session with questions they have attempted. Before helping the student, I'll ask how they attempted the problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would keep track of milestones the student has accomplished, and remind them of this to keep them motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would identify the root cause of the difficulty and think of solutions to address this. I would do this even if it means slowing the pace.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would encourage the student to write a dialectical journal. This way the student can write down what they thought was interesting as the student is still reading the story.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I usually ask if the student has questions. I want to make sure the student is always giving their best attempt.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'll usually find creative ways to remember bits of information. This way, the student can link the subject they're struggling with to something they like.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After teaching the material and going over examples, I would allow the student to attempt the problem without helping the student. If the student successfully solves the problem, then I know the student understands the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I remind the student of the progress they have already made.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I look at the areas where the students are having the most difficulty, and I address those points as quickly as possible.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt based on the level of the student's understanding. If the student is struggling to understand, I'll slow down the pace.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually use textbooks or lessons online.
