What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to always help the student, even if it involves giving extra time. Many students learn by modeling and doing. Learning does not always have to be verbal.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would ask questions first to get to know them a little. Find out what do they mostly like to do and ask about interests and hobbies.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by modeling first and giving students a chance to think on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by incorporating some of their likes into the lesson.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would use different ways of teaching and again incorporate things that they like to do in the lesson to use as examples.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students that are struggling with reading comprehension can be helped by sounding out the words, using hand claps to describe syllables, and also sounding out the letters.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategy that I have found to be the most successful when working with students is letting them express themselves as well as be themselves.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help the student get excited by using stuffed animals or making funny faces; students love that, and a lot of older students love jokes.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The technique that I would use to make sure that a student understands the material would be to do a brief overview using real life examples to help the students.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I could build a student's confidence by encouraging them using words such as 'good job', 'way to go', and 'awesome'.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I can evaluate a student's needs by asking questions and probing to see what they know.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by making sure that all material is grade level and age appropriate.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials that I usually use during a tutoring session would be paper, pencil, and dry erase markers and board.
