What is your teaching philosophy?

Every teaching opportunity is also an opportunity to learn for both the teacher and the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It is all about getting to know my student and how they learn. I will also introduce myself and make them feel comfortable with me. I will gain an understanding of areas of weakness and set goals to overcome those weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

You can help the student become an independent learner by giving them the tools they need to do so. Once the student has the skills, they, too, can teach themselves from what they already understand.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would teach my student about internal and external motivations and help to provide both of those for my student. I want them to want to complete goals, but I also want to award them for completing those goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find another way to teach the skill or concept to the student. Whether it be a hands on activity or visuals, I would do my best to come at the concept from another angle.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Give the student the tools they need by having the student slow down and talk about what they are reading as they are reading it. I would gradually talk less during a passage and ask fewer questions in the middle until the student could tell me the meaning of an entire passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Manage the learning environment and make the student feel safe and welcome. I like to start off by telling a student that they just need to be given the right tools that they may have not been given yet. I also like to start by telling them that mistakes are sometimes the best ways to learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would make the subject relate to the student. I would show them how the subject weaves into their daily life. Students are more often interested if they feel the subject relates to them in some manner or if they find they will have to know it for the future.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would teach from different angles. I would have lectures for those students who understand oral instruction. I would have hands on activities for those students requiring that. I would provide visuals and use manipulatives when needed as well. Then, I would provide reviews to make sure the student is understanding and completing goals. Scaffolding may be helpful.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praise and encouragement help build confidence. Making a comfortable environment for mistakes also builds confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

It is all about evaluating the student and being flexible to the needs of the student. The tutor gets to evaluate the student's needs as the sessions continue. The tutor must change their teaching style to meet the individual needs of the student. Another way to evaluate is to talk to the student or the parents of the student. They know best.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I make visuals if I feel the student would learn best that way. I have open discussions about the content if the student will learn best that way. If an activity is needed, I would create one. I would ask the student how they feel I could help them and be flexible accordingly.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use manipulatives, board games, posters, PowerPoints, worksheets, and tests.
