What is your teaching philosophy?
While I will be here as a guide, the goal is to help students gain the necessary knowledge to work through problems independently. This can be achieved through review of the fundamentals of a subject and through guidance in how to utilize these tools for success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first thing to do is establish where the student is at currently and where they would like to be. By seeing where the student stands, it becomes easier to set realistic goals so that both the student and I have something concrete to work towards throughout tutoring sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Ensuring that a student understands and possesses a plethora of information on the essentials of their subject allows for me, as a tutor, to focus on problem solving skills and strategies. This methodology results in the student becoming more experienced with doing things independently and applies across various disciplines.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Realistic goal-setting is one of the best ways to see progress and encourage continued motivation. Being able to reach small goals on the road to a student's larger ones helps to boost a student's morale and keep their interest in the subject.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
The first thing to do would be to go step-by-step through the concept or process and answer any and all questions the student has along the way. Following this, examples that reinforce the concept can be presented and practiced in order to clear up further confusions.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Strategies such as looking for context clues in a passage, rephrasing things in your own words, and simply practicing through reading are all valuable and effective ways of boosting a student's reading comprehension skills. Teaching a student how to take advantage of these is paramount to their improvement.
