I teach by example. As I read out loud, I would also vocalize what's going on in my head; the self-questioning. Ask students to listen to audiobooks and more independent reading of things they find interesting. Differentiate between reading a textbook and reading literature.

Teaching is the art of facilitating the academic and personal confidence of each student according to their individual strengths and goals.

Give assessments to determine the student's areas of interest; academic strengths and weaknesses; determine the type of learner they are; student's prior knowledge in the subject being tutored; student's expectations of tutor and tutoring in general; and academic goals of the student.

Teach learning and study skill strategies; model the skill or concept; guided practice with students; independent practice by student; student assessment; and teacher assessment. I have found that this strategy facilitates metacognition by the student, which serves them very well in their academic pursuits.

I ask the student what motivates them.

Reteach the skill or concept in as many different ways as possible until it sticks!

Reassuring the student that they can learn anything they want if they are patient and kind to themselves, willing to work hard, ASK QUESTIONS, and never give-up.

Tie it into their own personal interests. If they are baseball fans then I would use the economics of baseball to teach as many economic concepts as I could. If the student is an aspiring actor, then I would use that to teach how government and politics affects the arts through grants, legislation, and regulations.

Ask students to explain the skill or concept to me both verbally and in written form. If they can do these two things, they demonstrate that they have a firm understanding of the material.

Show them what they are capable of with encouragement and positive reinforcement.

Administer a learning styles assessment, personal interest inventory, and writing assessment, and get an academic history from the student, ask the student directly, and confer with parents and their teachers when appropriate.

The student's needs would determine the tools I use out of my toolbox. For example, if a student is dyslexic, I would use auditory or visual mediums to teach and administer assessments orally.

I use visual mediums such as graphs, charts, videos, organizational charts such as Venn diagrams and KWL's, and online teaching tools. I try to incorporate as much technology as possible without compromising the integrity of the learning.
