What is your teaching philosophy?

Working with an individual's strengths is key in my philosophy of learning. Different styles of learning may be used once a student's preference is briefly assessed and established.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would typically get to know their interests, goals, and desired outcomes in the tutoring process, and how I can best assist them to achieve their individual goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Figure out ways for the student to make learning fun and how to create internal dialogues that facilitate their desired learning outcomes.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

A brief analysis of where their potential pitfalls/habits may be hindering their success, and make a plan of action to overcome those weak areas by incorporating their actual strengths.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Troubleshoot. Also, researching different approaches to teaching a skill or concept and assessing their preferences in learning has proven beneficial.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There is no "one size fits all" solution. Every person is unique. I would ask questions and use my keen insight and intuition and gift for teaching to determine the best approach for the student on a case by case basis.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Just shoot the breeze for a while to develop trust and mutual understanding.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Identifying features and benefits, plus how a subject may personally enrich the student's life, is helpful.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Starting small, inch by inch, it's a cinch! Giving mostly positive feedback, with constructive criticism in only small doses.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Questions, questions, questions...

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By actively listening to the student's needs and also by observing their non-verbal signals.
