What is your teaching philosophy?
Understanding the students' difficulties clearly allows for the most efficient tutoring sessions.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Understand where they are struggling and try to develop background before tackling the problem.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Discuss tips on where to find information, and stay organized while tutoring.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Congratulate them on progress and set short term, achievable, goals.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
My approach would be to go through passages line by line until they felt they were comprehending, and then increase to 2 lines at a time, and so on.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I find it helpful to first assess where the student is having difficulty, as well as their level of motivation to improve.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find a way to relate it to subjects or activities they are interested in.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Teach back method and assessments.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Start with easy concepts and build from there. It is also helpful to praise and set small goals that can be achieved daily.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Learn which type of learner they are and assess if they have trouble with big picture or small detail, and then focus on the weaknesses.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I base my teaching style on the student's' needs by focusing on their weaknesses.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Visuals. I enjoy drawing concepts out as much as possible.
