What is your teaching philosophy?

Ask the student what they need help with. If a deficiency in an area becomes apparent when answering, then I will lay a foundation by addressing the deficiency. If a problem is difficult for the student, I'll demonstrate the same concept using a simple example, and explain that the same procedure will work with the more complicated problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Success is a great motivator, so showing a student that they can succeed will motivate them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would demonstrate the concept using a simple example, and explain that the same procedure will work with a more complex problem.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I'll ask them what work they need to complete. Working on that ensures the time is well spent.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Humor always helps. Reviewing any prerequisite knowledge will lay a solid foundation. I would demonstrate concepts using simple examples, and explain that the same procedures will work with more complex problems.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would encourage the student to try a problem without my assistance. If help is needed, I would provide it, but would have the student try another problem without assistance.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice! Understanding what a tutor is explaining is a good start, but the student has to practice on their own, until they are confident.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I'll ask what work they need to complete, or if they have specific questions. If deficiencies become apparent when answering questions, then I'll cover those prerequisite areas.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Sometimes a student may benefit from a short break, or may have just had enough for one session. Sometimes, a list of steps to follow in solving a problem is helpful. A simple example may help explain a more complicated one.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Primarily whatever work the student needs to complete; pen and paper, or the online platform; a calculator to check work.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself. Give encouragement. Ask what work needs to be completed. Ask if they have specific questions. Have the student answer questions to see where help is needed and to show them that they have a foundation of knowledge.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Ask them to try to do problems without my help, while I'm with them, but also on their own time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Practice helps here as well. Asking the student questions about what they read. Pointing to key words.
