What is your teaching philosophy?

Cater to the learning style of the individual.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Determine our goals, what success means to us, and try to figure out how the student learns most effectively.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would work with the student to determine an effective methodology for them to approach a new topic, that is best suited to their individual learning style.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by keeping our established goals in perspective, and constantly showing the progress that we are making towards reaching those goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try new approaches to the skill/concept, showing them how to apply their strengths to any type of material.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First and foremost is getting to know the student and understanding how they learn new material most effectively. This allows us to use our time wisely, makes sure that we are on the same page, and makes communication much easier.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get engaged with a subject that they are struggling in by showing them how the subject relates to him/her specifically. I would provide some context, and show how useful the knowledge is in the real world.
