What is your teaching philosophy?
Engage the student on all levels, and then lead them to the answer instead of pushing.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Try to find out the most effective way to teach the student. Relax and talk about how to get to the solution.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Find the student's favorite way to learn.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Field Trips! Barring that, find the most interesting thing about a subject and build around that.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
In this case, it is best to slow down and find the part of the concept that the student understands well, and build around it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Deeper immersion. Have the student try to feel the material. Also, material that interests the student must be utilized.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Hands-on instruction. Showing the student the material rather than telling the student.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find a part of the subject that the student can relate to, and expand the subject from this base.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Testing, oral review, and demonstration.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Positive reinforcement always.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The real thing. If the real thing is unavailable, then the next best thing is something that they can put their hands-on that is closely related.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
That depends on the student. Some like to write, others like to talk. Find out which, and the knowledge will reveal itself.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By finding out what interests the student. Learning is no fun if the student is not excited by the content.
